Weight Loss Recipe: Avocado, Walnut & Crispy Bacon Salad
November 15, 2008
Losing weight doesn’t have to be boring when you focus on bright, colourful meals. What does this mean? Simply by making sure your plate reflects a range of colours, you’ll naturally create more balanced and healthful menus. Not everyone has the time or the patience to count calories, but assessing the colours on your plate is something anyone can do - and it only takes an instant!
Why is colour important? Many fatty and caloric foods, such as dairy products and startchy carbs, are beige or brown. When there are too many of these drab colours on your plate, weight gain is almost certain.
That’s because these beige foods often are high in calories and can leave you feeling hungry later. A cup of beige or brown beans can be over 200 calories….but a cup of red or green vegetables is under a hundred! Add fresh greens, deep purple-reds and bright yellow-orange to a meal, and water the nutrient content go up, while calories go down! Plus, you’ll get more enjoyment from eating when there’s a variety of colours and flavors on your plate.
How to Eat All You Want and Still Lose Weight
November 14, 2008
How would you like to eat all you want and still lose weight, or maintain your trim figure?
Sounds impossible?
Have you seen those skinny young women who eat like horses, with plate after plate of food at the buffet table without putting on any weight?
Ok, so some of them may be bulimic. You know, the sort who eat all they want, then go to the toilet to throw up everything they just ate. Not only is that disgusting, it is very unhealthy. That damages your body in the long run.
No, I’m talking about the girls who just cannot seem to gain weight. Probably due to a very high metabolic rate. They burn off all the calories they consume, effortlessly. Not every skinny girl is bulimic or aneroxic or even on a stringent diet. Some are just naturally thin. I know. In my early twenties, I was one of them.
One Change Can Make All The Difference
November 14, 2008
Ever wondered why some people manage to keep their weight off easily and others just pile it all back on when they stop that new diet? The answer is easy, it comes down to one simple change.
Before we get to that simple change, you need to keep in mind these rules of thumb when it comes to dieting.
1. Never do a diet which forbids a food group. This is simply asking for trouble. One day, not matter how hard you try, you will eat something from the forbidden food group and fail. Not very positive is it? You are setting yourself up for disappointment. Dieting is hard enough, so try and make it easy as humanly possible.
2. Never give up trying. Overeating is a little like smoking, they are both addictive, costly and bad for your health. People recognise the world over that giving up smoking is very difficult but overeating is seen as a weakness. No matter what people may think, you can lose weight. Choose a diet that is right for you and start again. Never give up trying.
Calculate Your BMI - Do You Need to Lose Weight?
November 13, 2008
There are a few different ways to determine if you are overweight. Underwater weighing, computerized topography and measurement of skin folds with calipers can be the most accurate ways to measure fat. They can also be expensive and need to be done by professionals. Other options include the body mass index and waist measurement.
One of the most popular tools available is the body mass index (BMI). The body mass index was developed as a simple guide to assess your weight. This tool is an inexpensive, easy way to compare your body weight to the general population. It does have its limitations though. It does not take into account certain people, such as athletes, that have a higher than average amount of muscle. Muscle does weigh more than fat so these people may be considered overweight according to the BMI chart. Whether this puts them at a higher risk for disease is still unclear. Anyone who is overweight is at a higher risk of developing problems such as osteoarthritis. Our bodies are designed only to carry so much weight. Conversely, the BMI chart may put a person with too little muscle mass in the healthy range. This can include elderly and malnourished people who may obviously have health problems.
Weight Loss - Long Term Success Starts In Your Mind
November 13, 2008
Making the Decision:
Whether you are interested losing ten pounds that you put on in the last 3 months, or the 50 extra pounds you’ve had with you since college, the first step is making the decision to change. This step is often the most difficult and may take the longest time. Your mind will constantly bounce back and forth, weighing the pros and cons of making that change. It isn’t until you have clearly determined that the pros outweigh the cons that you will be ready to commit to change. This isn’t to say that there won’t be moments of ambivalence, but if you consciously go through this process, you can be ready to counteract your momentary lapses by reviewing the factors that led you to this decision. This will help you to renew your confidence in your decision.
How to Find Your Ideal Body Weight Part II
November 12, 2008
Body Mass Index (BMI)
Body Mass Index is an accurate indicator of surplus body fat than kilos or pounds. It is a mathematical ratio of height to weight that can be linked with body composition (or body fat percentage) and with indices of health risk.
Calculating BMI is as follows:
BMI = Weight (in kg) or BMI = Weight (in lbs) x 700
Height (in m)2 Height (in inches)2
For example, the calculation for someone weighing 80 kg (176 lbs) and 1.60 m (63 in) tall is:
BMI = 80 = 31.2 or BMI = 176 x 700 = 31.1
1602 632
The important thing here is :
BMI can be calculated either in imperial or metric.
weight in kilograms and height must be in meters.
Or weight in pounds and height must be in inches.
People with a BMI of 25.1 to 29.9 are considered overweight, and people with a BMI of 30 or above are considered obese.
Thus, from the example above, a person weighing 80 kg and is 1.60 m tall is considered obese. A high BMI assumes a higher percentage of body fat, which places a person at greater risk for developing chronic diseases and other serious illnesses.
Study Finds Healthy Mouth - Healthy Body Relationship
November 11, 2008
According to a new study appearing in the American Journal of Periodontology, researchers have found a significant correlation between healthy eating and healthy gums. Specifically, those people who were not overweight, consumed a nutritious diet, and regularly exercised with moderate intensity were 40% less likely to suffer from gum disease.
Of the over-12,000 people surveyed, only 3% of the people possessed all three traits (not being overweight, eating a nutritious diet, and exercising regularly), but its interesting to note that as people added more of these traits to their arsenal, their periodontal health improved as well. Those people who possessed two of the traits were 29% less likely to suffer gum disease, and those who possessed only one of the three key traits were 16% less likely to suffer gum disease.
In statistics, there is a saying that goes like this: “Correlation is not necessarily causation.” This means that, while the correlation is statistically significant, one must decide whether it is the healthy behavior that is the cause of the healthy mouth, or the healthy mouth the cause of the healthy behavior.

Weight Loss? 2 Skills You Need
November 10, 2008
If you have been dieting, there is a good chance you have lost weight. Unfortunately, large numbers of successful dieters quickly regain the poundage. If you wish to maintain the weight you have lost without developing substitute excesses such as overspending, overworking, excessive drinking or smoking, you must satisfy the emotional hunger that causes people to overeat. To do this you need to master two basic skills ? self-nurturing and setting effective limits. Self-nurturing is the ability to check our feelings and needs throughout the day in order to know and honor ourselves and better meet our needs. Setting effective limits is the skill of having reasonable expectations and following through with them. That enables us to take action and have more power and greater safety in our lives.
People who have mastered these two skills are far more likely to be healthy and happy. Learning them is not a quick fix and takes time. But, from the first moment you use them, you will begin to feel better and more satisfied. After these skills are used over and over again, they become integrated into our brains, and the changes are developmental, that is, we begin to feel as if we have a new life.
Weight Loss Through the Right Natural Food
November 9, 2008
At its most basic, dieting is about burning more calories than you take in. It’s simple mathematics. With the variety of novelty diets on the market today, this simple fact is often overlooked.
Natural foods have great health benefits, as well as being great for the dieter. Combine eating more natural foods with more exercise and you should see results. The more processed the food, the more calories.
What natural foods help you lose weight? Water, the most natural thing we can put in our bodies, is essential. Try 8 glasses of spring water or filtered water each day. You’ll feel full and help your body eliminate waste.
Eat fresh fruits and vegetables. They are full of vitamins and minerals, and you can eat veggies until you’re full.
Wholegrain muesli is great. Choose wholegrain bread and bakery items made with wholegrain meal instead of white flour and sugar.
Nuts and seeds are great sources of nutrients and fun to eat as snacks.
Use brown rice with your meals, and fresh potatoes are fine.
