What are Some Benefits For Quitting Smoking?

November 30, 2006

There are immediate benefits for quitting smoking. Within eight hours after you quit, the level of dangerous carbon monoxide gas in the blood returns to normal. Also, within the next 24 hours, your chances of having a heart attack begin to decrease dramatically. And just think of the money you’ll be saving with the cost of cigarettes going up all the time, this to me is one of the biggest benefits for quitting smoking.

Within the next two to three weeks you can expect to experience even more health benefits for quitting smoking. Your lung function will increase by 30 percent, and within one year your risk of coronary heart disease will have dropped in half. And after 10 years, your chances of dying from lung cancer will have dropped by about one half.

These are just a very few of the benefits, there are alot more than this, believe me. There are just too many to list them all here.

But one thing you can be sure of, that if you decide to quit today, you will definitely be healthier tomorrow. You can say good-bye to yellow fingernails and a wrinkled face, as well as dramatically decreasing your chances of getting cancer and heart disease. The choice is yours. The power and ability to quit is in your hands.

Inactive Alert: Essential Proteins for Sedentary People

November 30, 2006

The importance of protein in diet has been clearly established by nutritional scientists, and widely accepted by athletes. Among other vital functions, protein is indispensable for creating muscle. Just as important is protein’s essential ability to repair damaged muscles after training[i].

While the value of protein in diet has been accepted and promoted within the athletic community, it has been less well disseminated within the very large sedentary population. Currently making up about 25% of Americans[ii] ? or 1 in every 4 people ? sedentary people are defined as those who undertake less than half an hour of moderate physical activity per day[iii].

A key problem to solve, therefore, is that the bulk of these sedentary Americans do not know that they are, or more likely are not, getting enough protein in their diet. This large group of sedentary people reflects the myth that protein-rich nutrition is important only for athletes and those who are physically active. The Reference Daily Intake[1] amount for protein is 50 grams, and most sedentary people are not coming close to meeting this standard.

When to Exercise

November 30, 2006

Do you hit the gym in the morning, before your crazy working day, or you check it out late at night. It is hard to figure out what is best for you and what best fit in your busy life style, but with few tips you can make your lifting life much easier.

First rule is to listen to your body. Not everybody has the same daily power cycles, and it is a good idea to start noticing if your body crying during that morning routine or it is really enjoying it. Usually, energy is at its peak in the early hours of morning with the follow ups of lows and downs. The lowest level of the energy usually comes to midnight hours of 3am to 4am.

The best time to exercise is 8 to 10 hours after your awaking from your normal sleep cycle. That means that the early morning work out might be not for you, unless you absolutely "feel it". Exercising 8-10 hours after you wake up, will give you easier work out, will be better for your joints, and will be more pleasant due to your more appropriate mood phase.

The Magic Formula Works its Wonder Today Part 4

November 29, 2006

The people of earlier times depended on the rich resource of plants and herbs to cure them of various ailments and maladies. The world has changed a lot but not the basics of life. Even today, many of the life sustaining drugs are procured from natural resources instead of the fact that man has progressed leaps and bounds.

Many of thousand of years old remedies go unnoticed because we have become oblivious of our immediate surroundings. Hoodia Gordonii, the cactus with miraculous effect on appetite is one such plant whose use remained limited to the tribal people of South Africa and it is only recently that the world has come to know of its unique quality. The 20,000 old San tribe used it to curb the appetite while going on long hunting expedition. It was a life sustaining plant for this simple tribe. One of the members of San tribe says, ‘I learned how to eat it from my forefathers?. It is my food, my water and a medicine for me.’

Migraine Headaches And Chronic Pain: Essential Oil Of Lavender, A Natural Remedy

November 29, 2006

If you suffer migraines or chronic headaches, you are not alone. In fact, you’re in good company. A migraine is only one type of headache. In the United States alone, 24 million people suffer with migraines with 75% of them being women.

Another, powerful statistic: 1 out of 13 people over the age of 15 wake up with a morning headache. Women are twice as likely to experience depression and/or anxiety disorders as men. If you experience depression or anxiety, you are twice as likely to wake up with a headache.

Depression and chronic pain go hand in hand. All of these statements point to the fact that millions of men and even more women in the United States endure headaches, chronic pain, depression, anxiety and sleep disorders. It is simply distressing to read these facts. We are suffering both physically and emotionally with pain and moods that take away the joy of daily living.

As a woman with fibromyalgia, I have made it a personal project to learn about herbal therapies to help myself manage my own headaches and chronic pain. As a nurse, I feel compelled to share alternative therapies that can ease the pain of migraine and help us manage the stress of daily living that triggers migraine headaches, muscle aches and depression.

Hoodia ? Its Basic Nature Part 3

November 29, 2006

Hoodia Gordonii a cactus plant found thousands of miles away in the Cape Town of South Africa, has become incredibly beneficial for people all over the world. Centuries ago, the simple tribal folk of South Africa cultivated the plant so that they could chew it and satiate hunger and thirst for three to four days.

Hoodia is a typical arid plant with no leaves. In fact, the leaves are reduced to spikes to avoid the loss of water from the surface. It is succulent or juicy in nature. In appearance, it is quite unusual with around ten tentacles. The size is small not more than three-fourth of a foot and it is covered with spikes. The fertile ground of Hoodia cacti are the partial deserts of Botswana, Angola, South Africa and Namibia. There are twenty different species of this family but not all serve the same purpose. The credit of an appetite suppressant exclusively belongs to Hoodia Gordonii.

Not All Protein is Created Equally

November 28, 2006

America’s focus on nutritious eating began to receive national attention in the 1940s when President Roosevelt introduced the RDA, or Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) model. This model, which took on the shape of a pyramid in the 1980s (and hence now goes by the term "food pyramid"), has gone through a number of iterations since its inception more than 60 years ago[i].

This change and evolution of the RDA model is, in many respects, a positive step. It demonstrates that, just as America’s information on diet and nutrition is advancing, so too are the models that guide its eating habits. In fact, the USDA itself has decided to update the term and now refers to "RDI’s" ("Reference Daily Intake") instead of RDA’s.

However, undermining some of this positive change is the fact that many Americans are increasingly confused over what, how, and when to eat. A survey conducted by the USDA in 1996 verified this fact when 40% of respondents agreed strongly with the statement that "there are so many recommendations about healthy ways to eat, it’s hard to know what to believe"[ii].

Lead Poisoning in Environment and Our Children

November 28, 2006

Pollution is generallyy defined as the release of harmful environmental contaminants. Pollution can take two major forms: local pollution and global pollution. In the past, only local pollution was thought to be a problem. For example, coal burning produces smoke and in sufficient concentrations can be a health hazard. One slogan, taught in schools was “The solution to pollution is dilution”. In recent decades, awareness has been rising that some forms of pollution pose a global problem.

Traditionally, serious pollution sources include chemical plants, oil refineries, nuclear waste dumps, regular garbage dumps (many toxic substances are illegally dumped there), incinerators, PVC factories, car factories, plastics factories and corporate animal farms creating huge amounts of animal waste.

Lead is still the single most important chemical toxin for children and is probably the best known example of a neurotoxin to which children are particularly vulnerable. Their special vulnerability to lead is related to their exposure (hand?mouth activity, ingestion of paint chips),the fact that upon exposure children absorb four times more lead than adults, and their susceptibility at a critical period of brain development.
